Where Are The Siberian Traps?
Siberian Traps are in Siberia, Russia. The Siberian traps are a formation of flood basalt and was caused because of the massive eruptive events through the Permian-Triassic realm. Permian-Triassic Extinction Event is known as one of the largest volcanic events that have occurred in the last 500 million years of the geological history of the earth and causing the Siberian Traps.
Substantial amount of basaltic lava was spread all over the primeval Siberia in a flood basalt event. Although the area covered now a days is about 2 million square km, but the original area covered initially was believed to be about 7 million square km.
The source of the basalt of the Siberian traps is believed to be mantle plume, which had the impact on the base of the crust and extruding through the Siberian Craton. But the conflict among scholars about the source is still on.
