Mersa Infection

A woman in our pool exercise group was treated for MERSA infection. She is back but has a dime-sized hole in her leg that is open and looks white around edges. Does chlorine kill MERSA? Are we at risk being in the pool with her?

It is unlikely that you would contract MRSA from sharing properly chlorinated pool water, as the bacteria is sensitive and destroyed by the chlorine, which works as a disinfectant.  You would be more likely to be suscpetilbe if you were exposed to an ill person in everyday contact, or in a hospital or enclosed setting.

MRSA is caused by a certain antibiotic resistant strain of the staphyloccoci bacterium.Contact with the staph bacteria wont necessarily cause mersa as most of us unknowingly carry this bacteria everywhere. Therefore Mrsa is the result of this staph etering into the bloodstream and creating toxins. If you are unsure if the pool is properly chlorinated, dont use it if you have an open sore or tend to get swimmer's ear,or accidentally swallow water.

A family member with mrsa visited and left me with bloody sheets which also left two decent sized stains on the mattress. How do I handle clean up without being at risk?  Also my grandchildren seep in this bed, how safe is it for them?
