The Conquest of Canaan is an important biblically historical event dealing with the Israelites' conquest of the land of Canaan (older name for Palestine). The book of Joshua covers the event in detail.

At the time of Moses' death, Joshua assumed active command of Israel's army. God commanded Joshua to cross the Jordan River and take the land promised to Abraham and his descendants Israel.

The most important battle in the conquest is the capturing of the walled city Jericho. When the officials of Jericho learned of Israel's presence in the land, they closed their gates. God gave Joshua strict instructions, which he followed, and the city was utterly destroyed, all but Rahab and her family, whom he spared because she had helped some of his spies.

Another important even that takes place is Joshua's execution of the five kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon in the battle at Gibeon. The Bible records that Joshua commanded the sun to be still and that God hearkened to his request, and that day stands alone in the annals of time.

Victory followed Joshua until 31 kings were overcome and most of the land was brought into his subjection.
