It is a part of Sangre de Cristo Mountains which is a subrange in the Rocky Mountains. Wheeler Peak is named after Major George Montague Wheeler who led a party of surveyors and naturalists for ten years and was involved in collecting geologic and biologic data for New Mexico and six other south-western states. The mountain peak was formerly known as Taos Peak.
