What Are The 39 Articles Of The Church Of England?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

They are a kind of constitution, or list of rules, about the rules of believing in Christianity, according to the C. of . E. (as opposed to Catholocism, with the CoE usurped in England).  You can read them all for yourself, with some explanatory notes about many of them, in the back of the CoE Book of Common Prayer.

Every Anglican minister must agree to abide by them to become ordained. The articles were generated by English Reformers, including Archbishop Thomas Cranmer in the mid 1500s.

They set out basic Christian creed, such as the belief in a single God, the existance of the Holy Spirit, the son of God being Jesus, and affirmation of the existance of Jesus and the meaning of his death and resurrrection.  The importance of scripture is established, including the extent to which Christians are bound by the Old Testament, how people should relate to the Church, what Baptism is for, the role of the CoE in communicating with God, and how only Christians get salvation.
