What Is The Plot Of The Neil Diamond Film The Jazz Singer?

The Jazz Singer is about the pastor Jess Robinovich, who by day is a cantor, but by night enjoys the life of a singer with a group of black musicians.  When a fight breaks out at a club where Jess is playing (after he is discovered to be a white man with boot polish on his face), he is bailed out by his father, a conservative Jewish man played beautifully by Laurence Olivier.

Jess is married to a nice Jewish girl, but he is not happy, he loves his music and when his black musician friends get an opportunity to  work in LA for a short time, they ask Jess to join them.  Jess's wife and father are not happy.  He begins to spend a lot of time out in LA with his new friend, a woman.  Slowly, they fall in love as Jess begins to slowly earn some success, but torn apart by the two parts of his life, things begin to go wrong.
