This was Lemuel Gulliver, the main character of Jonathan Swift's novel Gulliver's Travels. This novel was published in 1726 and is a satire on the manners and politics of Swifr's own time. For instance, the tiny people of Lilliput go to war with their neighbours over the right way to eat a boiled egg - big end or little end first. Swift was making fun of the differences between the Catholic and Protestant religions, and the ridiculous war in Liliput shows his opinion of the war between England and France.
The giants of Brobdignag, a peaceful farming people, also help to show Swift's opinion of the English (he was Irish) and the human race generally, when their king, having heard some of their history, describes Gulliver's people as "a race of pernicious little vermin." Lilliput and Brobdignag are just two of the places Gulliver visits on his travels.
