Will We Ever Recognize All The Enzymes?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are at least the prestigious enzyme commissions of the international union of the biochemistry has finally stated, six groups of the enzymes with 6 fundamental different enzymatic activities. One group for instance, is concerned with the transport of electron form a donor to an acceptor which, aside from other actions, is of vital importance for cell respiration.

Another group transfers whole molecules from a donor to an acceptor, i-e it moves fragments from one part of amino acid chain to another. Yet another group changes the substrates by rearranging a certain molecular group of the substrates. A further group provides energy for other biosynthetic processes by catalyzing the cleavage of energy reach substrates. The fifth group breaks up each substrates molecule into two parts and the final group is able to cleave compounds into the smaller parts. Since the enzyme in this last group performs cleavage by introducing a molecule of water, they are known as hydrolysis.

When a biochemical substances is giving a name ending in –ase, you can be pretty certain that it is not a beginning of enzyme research were different, they usually ended in '—in' as with pepsin and trypsin which have already been discussed. They were among the first enzymes to be studied ore intensively.
