    The famous BBC Radio 4 show The Archers is the longest-running radio soap opera in the world. It has been on air since January 1, 1951. A pilot episode was broadcast over the Easter week in the year 1950. As of January 1, 2007, the show will have 15, 047 episodes on air.

    The story revolves around the families Archer, Grundy, Woolley, Aldridge, Pargetter, Tucker and Carter. The members of the show's cast have gone on to become household names in the United Kingdom. Norman Painting, Patricia Greene, Judy Bennett, Richard Attlee, Graeme Kirk, Timothy Bentinck, Nigel Carrivick, Felicity Finch, Sunny Ormonde, Elizabeth Marlowe, Colin Skipp, Louiza Patikas, Frances Graham, Bonnie Engstrom and Tom Graham have played leading roles as the members of the middle-class Archer family, who own and manage Brookfield Farm. It is set against a rural backdrop in a fictional village called Ambridge in the English Midlands.
