There I little known about the original candle and the process of making them, however, it has often been written that the first candles were developed by the Ancient Egyptians who used rushlights, or torches, made by soaking the pithy core of reeds in molten tallow. The rushlights had no wick like a candle and it was the Romans who were credited with developing the wick candle, using it as an aid to travellers at dark, and lighting homes and places of worship at night.
Modern candle-making processes vary. Today it is more economical to use a mix of paraffin and steric acid and but most candles are made through the process of placing a cotton wick into the hot wax which is then moulded, dipped, moulded and dipped again and then pressed and rolled into the desired shape and size.
Candles should be stored in a cool, dark, dry place and, for tapers, (long candles) in a flat position to prevent warping. When stored properly, candles can be enjoyed for years and play an important role in traditions.
