Credit card processing software enables transactions to be processed manually each day by the merchant on computer and then batch authorised via a secure connection.

It is one of the three most widely used payment gateway types and sits between card swiping machines that we are all familiar with at shop checkouts and fully automated e-commerce. The normal end user profile is a company with a small volume of high value sales where revenue or sales volumes do not justify an all-singing all-dancing real time web payment gateway.

For example, a company may selling its goods online but also take orders from customers on the phone and via their glossy mail order brochure. Each day their small sales team aggregate the orders received and manually enter the credit card details and the sales amounts into the desktop PC payment software. When this task is finished, the complete sales list is securely transmitted via the web to the bank's clearinghouse. After a short time crunching through the list, the authorisations arrive back with codes signifying whether each request has been approved or declined.
