Thanksgiving Turkey
How do you prepare your Thanksgiving turkey? Do you stuff it, do you deep fry it? Do you have something else besides turkey?

I can't wait!!! I LOVE Thanksgiving. I love it more than the Christmas dinner. I roast a stuffed turkey every year in the oven. I am up before dawn, make sage dressing like my mom always made it. All day I bake pies and such, and I carry on as though I have 20 people coming to dinner (which has only happened once at my house on Thanksgiving). Hey, but Idon't care. I am absolutely "fed" by the clinking and clanging and the pleasure of the whole deal. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

I do the same thing and there have also been some years when it's only the two of us sitting down eating enough food for 50 people! BUT, we always have leftovers! AND, I just love the smell of everything cooking and baking....OH MY almost as good as you know what! LOL
Major chuckle going on here.... !!! :) :)
Excellent idea! One of my relatives, who is a strict vegetarian, had us all for Thanksgiving one year. She knew we were "meat" eaters, so she prepared a Tofu Turkey for all of us. She somehow shaped tofu into the shape of a turkey! LOL She made stuffing with bread, vegetables and nuts. Was different, and a nice change for us. However, we will be having the regular turkey this year..

Never heard of the sprite or coke. Would a can of beer be good? I've heard about that beer chicken recipe that is suppose to be good. Do you cover with the lid of the roasting pan or do you use a bag?

Butterball has a terrific site with tons of recipes. I've had it deep fried and it was pretty good but be careful - I've seen the deep fryers catch everything around them on fire.
Thanksgiving is about remembering what we have to be thankful for; not about turkey. If you and your guests don't mind you could barbecue steaks or order pizza. If you do steaks I prefer rib eye, medium rare, baked potato with butter and sour cream. What time are we eating? ;)

OMG rib eye. My fav.
Yes to rib eye, the king of steaks. Although I wouldn't turn my nose up at a T-bone.
A: Lean steak? Yuck, I'd rather eat my shoes.
You're absolutely right Boris...Thanksgiving is about being thankful! But I am also thankful for turkey - lol Last year we had Thanksgiving at our house. Before dinner, I gave everyone a blank sheet of paper and had everyone write down what they were thankful for. At dinner, we all took turns reading them. It was quite humbling. Your steaks sound wonderful - would you come over on Thanksgiving and grill some for us??? Dinner is at 4:00ish

Nanny, your mention of going out for dinner on Thanksgiving reminds me of the movie Christmas Story where the family's dogs ate their turkey and they had to go out for Chinese food because that was the only restaurant open on Christmas Day! Lol

Love that movie. Darren McGavin is hilarious. The kitchen full of hounds stealing the turkey is a great scene.
Ooooh yeah, Nanny! Darren, of course.... I know that name. Bewitched, right? ...LOL (Only you would get this. ---or maybe only I would!! Ha ha)
No, not that Darren. Darren McGavin use to be the star of the series called The Night Stalker ('70's I think). This Darren, in the movie, had the lamp shaped like a woman's leg, remember?
It really just depends on how you like it i just .I bake mine i stuff it a little the i rub butter on it the i pore a sprite or coke in it so that it wont be dry .......cook it on 400 for about 4 to 5 hours depending on how big it is ........i stuff mine with onion , celery, and bell peppers saute in butter then put it inside the turkey.

We stuff it and cook it in the oven. We buy it at the grocery store and de-gut it and follow the directions on the package but put our own creative spin on it.

My family has what I consider the "traditional" turkey dinner. 20(ish)lb turkey, stuffed with homemade stuffing (bread and spices), and served with home made mashed potaoes, corn, beans, homemade corn bread and always an apple pie for dessert! Mmm.. You guys are making my hungry thinking about it! It is interesting to hear about what other families do on Thanksgiving. I would like to one year go to a homeless shelter and serve food, rather than focus on myself, help someone else, but haven't yet done it. But thanx for the question desert kid!

I have wanted to do the same thing by going to the Salvation Army or another similar place to serve food to the needy. I think it would be a good life-learning lesson. I guess we both are procrastinators.
I feel really bad...I have never even attempted to make turkey. For some reason it intimidates me. We always go to my in-laws for Thanksgiving and they do all of the cooking. I don't know what my mother in law does to the bird but it is always the best thing I have ever eaten! I can't wait!

Our turkey is usually a traditional stuffed and roasted bird. Just regular bread stuffing with onions, celery and mushrooms. I think my favorite part of the meal is the gravy. Gravy makes everything good. We usually put a little sherry in it.
This year the people in my family who usually do the hosting and the cooking will be out of town, so the three of us who are left behind are planning to go out for Mexican food.

We have ours deep-fried, but we let the grocery store do it. In the deep South, you can buy your turkey from the store and have it fried at the same place--no worries about catching anything on fire! Everybody brings a dish to add, so no one is left with the burden of fixing (or cleaning up) the whole meal.

Hey Danielle, if it gets you out of the kitchen, by all means, enjoy your day at your mother-in-laws...I actually think it is harder to cook/grill a steak than a turkey..because I always under or over cook the steak!
