Because it is not just blood like when you cut yourself - it is your womb lining coming away which is made up of skin cells and blood and mucus-type fluid. If you have large lumps/clots, say bigger than your thumb size which don't fall apart, you should see your doctor, as although not unusual, you shouldn't really have clots like that in a normal period.
