Although several wars were fought between the American colonists and the British troops, they were just a response from the American colonists that elucidated their desire to be treated equally on par with the British citizens back in Great Britain. Independence and the formation of a separate national entity was not the motive of the colonists in the initial phases of their altercation with the British government.
As a matter of fact, the American colonists still wanted to be ruled by the British government but on fair terms. For this they sent a letter to the King of England, which was called the Olive Branch Petition that made all these demands. Nevertheless when King George refused to acknowledge or even read the Olive Branch petition and instead ordered British ships to block American ports, he went beyond the realms of patience of the American colonists.
This was further instigated by Thomas Paine who convinced the colonists to demand for independence rather than equal rights. Together these two factors contributed towards the transformation of equal citizen treatment demand to the ultimate demand for independence.
