In effect all poetry is suitable for children of all ages. The introduction of poetry comes from when children are babies in the form of lullabies and nursery rhymes. These have soothing rhythms and obvious rhyme which appeal to the repetitive nature of children. These early forms of poetry are invaluable in every child's early development as they assist knowledge of language including syntax and grammar, and also enjoyment of language.

Nursery rhymes and number songs are used to aid the learning of mathematics throughout the early educational years for the same reasons. They are an invaluable resource at both school and home. As children get older they respond to poetry that is relevant to them or that has an element of the ridiculous of the imaginative. Nonsense rhyme and comical poetry is very suitable from the age of seven upwards. Examples of poets regularly named as children's favourite include Michael Rosen and Dr Seuss.
