Supersonic means faster than the speed of sound.  The prefix "super" in math and science means "above".  The suffix "sonic" means sound.  Scientists have applied the term "supersonic" to describe anything that travels faster that the speed of sound.

The speed of sound, under certain conditions, is about 768 miles per hour (or 343.14 m/s).
