Can I Legally Break A Lease Without A Penalty If The Landlord Was Negligent To Change The Locks?

I have been renting my apartment for 7 months on a 1 year lease. Recently, about a month ago, we had a break in (no forced entry) around 11PM. Apparently, the maintenance worker told me that the locks were never changed when the previous tenant moved out. Nothing was stolen or damaged, but I did file a police report. Can I legally break the lease without penalty due to their neglect? How should I approach the situation?

Yes you can break the lease provided there is some written clause in your lease agreement. You don't require to pay the landlord any other dues at all.
