The most famous red light district of Amsterdam is known as De Wallen. It is an important tourist attraction. Prostitution has been legalised in the Netherlands, but most of the commercial sex workers who service their customers at De Wallen are illegal immigrants. De Wallen is also known as Walletjes or Rosse Buurt. Each of the alleys in De Wallen contains hundreds of tiny one-room apartments. These rooms have been rented by female (and sometime male, usually transgender) prostitutes who offer their services from behind a window. De Wallen also has several sex shops, sex theatres, peep shows, museums dedicated to sex and cannabis and a number of coffee shops which sell various types of cannabis products. De Wallen is located in one of the oldest localities in Amsterdam. It covers several blocks south of the Oude Kerk church and there are a number of canals across the network of alleys.
