According to the most recent information, UK passport holders do not require a visa when visiting South Africa. This exemption also includes residents of the Republic of Ireland, the British Overseas Territories, the Isle of Man and the Virgin Islands. When entering South Africa, you must present a valid passport and it is fairly common practice for customs agents to request that your travel document be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of departure.

UK passport holders are permitted to stay in South Africa for up to 90 days without a visa. Those visitors, however, who intend to stay for a longer period of time or who wish to study or work in South Africa will have to apply for a temporary residence permit, a work seeker's or a study permit.

It is always best to confirm with the South African consulate or embassy closest to where you live that visas are not required for your visa, as you must apply for these prior to your departure in order to be permitted entry into the country.

Britain is a part of the Commonwealth countries. A British citizen does not need a passport to enter South Africa as South Africa is also part of the Commonwealth countries. All You need is a British passport valid for at least 6 months. I know it's too late, but I hope it helps.
