Montserrat, the lush green abode of an island, has its home in the Caribbean Sea. The island is a part of a chain of islands called Lesser Antilles. The island is often referred to as the 'Emerald Island of the Caribbean' because it resembles closely to the coastal part of Ireland and also the first European settlers of the island were the Irish. As Ireland is often called as the Emerald Isle, the island of Montserrat has also got the name.
The island is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom and officially it is called the 'Crown Colony of Montserrat'. The capital of the island is Plymouth and the official language is English. Its area is one hundred and two square kilometres and the estimated population in the year 2005 was 4,488.
It was Christopher Columbus who named the island as such as a namesake of this island existed in the region of Catalonia, Spain.
