My Sister Has A Pair Of Cockatiels Who Are Laying Eggs But She Doesn't Want To Raise Babies. Is It OK To Move Them To My House During This Time?
I have read that moving the cage can stop breeding but I would like to get the birds and raise the babies. Will moving them disrupte anything or traumatize the parents so that they will not continue caring for the eggs?
Moving the cage, even into another room may cause the birds focus to change from the eggs and they may not stay on the eggs. You really wouldn't know until you tried. Normally a person would pull the eggs and throw them away if they did not want chicks. In my experience, frequently this will cause the parents to start laying again. The chances of cockatiel eggs hatching and the parents actually caring for them is really pretty slim unless you have them set up as breeders. There are so many opportunities for things to go wrong along the way - like not enough humidity in the room, bird feces on the eggs during the time they were laid, parents turning them too much during the last days. Then if they do hatch... parents don't know how to care for them and perhaps you don't either. Getting an incubater as logic101 says is something you could try, however good ones are expensive and generally not an easy expense for someone not planning to breed on a continueing basis. I guess, I would suggest letting the eggs and birds stay where they are and see what the parents do. If they hatch (21 to 24 days) you could try pulling the chicks and care for them yourself.
Well what ever you do they will not leave eggs with birds if you don't want more babies then you must separate eggs from your birds that is the only way you can stop your birds to have more babies.
