In all cases, help from a fully qualified veterinarian is essential. The vet will be able to advise about the cause and right course of action, especially if an infection is involved. The infection itself needs to be treated correctly to get rid of it. Aquatic turtle infections are usually fungal or bacterial in origin. To treat them properly may require that the turtle be rehoused -- either a new cage in existing home or a new home altogether -- in addition to appropriate medications.
