The abbreviation d.c. stands for direct current, referring to the constant flow of electrical charge from a high to a low potential. This flow passes through a conductor, typically a wire, or in another sense through electron or ion beams fired from a powerful source. The voltage of a DC component is proportional to its current. This type of circuit is generally used in switches and lighting fixtures, largely due to its low current and lack of a need for alternating current as the amount of voltage tends to remain the same, e.g. the strength of a light. DC is also used in battery applications, as well as solar panels, where the level of power produced is also directly proportionate to the source of energy. In comparison, the vast majority of transmitting electricity, such as television sets, radio and telephones, use alternating current, as a result of the need for varying degrees of power
