If Your Dog Has Mange,Can You Smell A Foul Odor?

My older dog, lab/retriever mix has suddenly started this repetitious itchy, at one time he lost quite a bit of fur. Now although his hair has grown back, he continues to itch frequently and we have noticed a foul smell coming from the area he bites and tears with his paws. Help!

No mange (mites) itself does not usually have an odor.  The affected skin can become secondarily infected with yeast, bacteria, or both and this leads to the odor.  Mange mites are unusually in an older dog, they most commonly affect puppies.  Typically when we see them in older dogs it is because their immune system has become compromised.  Other skin diseases like ringworm, hot spots, and allergies need to be ruled out too.  Have your dog seen by a veterinarian to diagnose the skin disease and make sure there is not an underlying disease leading to immune system compromise.
