Even a very minor accident can cause an unrestrained child to be thrown around inside the car, causing injury to themselves or others, and they could be thrown outside the car through a window. It is unsafe to hold a child on your lap, in a crash at just 30mph a child without a seatbelt on can be thrown with a force up to 60 times their body weight. If a child were on your lap sharing your seatbelt, he or she could be crushed under your weight.

New laws are to being planned to try and cut down on the amount of child deaths and injuries that occur on Britain's roads every year. There is no upper age limit, but children under 135 cm in height will be required soon, by law to use appropriate restraint and booster seat. Cars are designed and built for adult passengers, seat belts without booster seats, are not safe for children under 135cm.

I believe the law states that they only have to be in a booster seat until they are 4 but they do have to be in restraints. Even at almost 40, I wear my seatbelt wherever I am riding and encourage my near adult children to do the same.
