    South Dakota is a Midwestern state located in America. The name Dakota is derived from the Lakota Dakota American Indian tribes.

    Situated towards  north-central America, South Dakota is intersected by the Missouri river, separating the state into two socially and economically diverse halves, which are known as "east-river" and "west-river". Traditionally dominated by an agriculture based financial system and a pastoral lifestyle. South Dakota shares its borders with North Dakota towards the north, with Nebraska towards the south, with Iowa and Minnesota towards the east and with Wyoming and Montana towards the west.

    According to the census conducted in the year 2000, the total area of this region was estimated to be 77,163 square miles. The census report of 2000 also stated that the total population of this region was 754,844, having an average population density of 9.9 per square mile.
