He was the third child, and first son, of John and Mary Shakespeare, born around 23-6 April, 1564, (scholars still are not sure!). Educated at the King's School, Stratford-on Avon, his hometown, from the age of 7. Among other subjects, he was taught Latin and Greek. His father removed him from school, at around 14, to work in the family business. At 18, he married Anne Hathaway, 8 years his senior, and they produced three children, Susannah, Hamnet and Juliet. Hamnet died aged 11 of the plague (Bubonic), with him died Shakespeare's lineage. We next hear of Shakespeare in London around 1586-7, working in the Theatre, along with the troupe of actor's who rented the playhouse. (The playhouse was called the Theatre.) Exactly when his plays were "risked" on the London stage, is unknown. What IS known, is the fantastic effect they had on London theatregoers, forcing the doyen of playwrights at the time, Christopher Marlowe, to write EdwardII, just to keep up! A voracious reader, his favourite authors re-cur in his work time and time again. Ovid, Raphael Holinshead, Sir Edward Hall, Sir George North, Shakespeare constantly alludes to this small coterie of writers, for his inspiration, and, from them, are returned such plays of English rhetoric that they are for all time.
