What Is So Important About The Ship HMS Victory?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

HMS Victory was a ship which was used as the 'flagship' for Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar (21st October 1805) where victory was secured against the French.
HMS Victory was designed by Thomas Slade and work began on the ship on 23rd July 1759.  She was then launched on 7th May 1765 and commissioned i.e. put into active service in 1778.
She was the most successful 104 gun, first rate ship of the fleet and as such her prowess was revered.
Before being used at Trafalgar, she was the flagship of several Admirals, including Keppel, Howe, Kemperfelt and Jervis.
After the success of the Battle of Trafalgar, she was kept in active service, but finally completed her sea going days in 1812, as new technology made her capacity less than other newer boats which were being commissioned.
She is still a major heritage attraction in Porstmouth, England.
