The city of Toronto is one of the major cities in North America along with Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles; it is the largest city in Canada and the economic center of the country. The city is the capital of the province of Ontario and is situated on the banks of Lake Ontario in the south eastern part of the country; the population density in the region is the highest as compared to the rest of the country.

According to the census conducted in 2001 the population of Toronto is 2,481,494 or about 2.5 million people; the density is 3,939 per sq km (10,203 per sq mile). Toronto is a city important on the international scene and is home to several well developed industries like medical research, software development, telecommunications, media and publishing and film and fashion; the city is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and high standard of living along with a safe and secure environment.
