In the first decade of the 20th century, toys such as Crayola Crayons and the first die-cast toy car, the model T Ford were launched. Lego, which is still produced today, was first put on the market in the 1930's and is hugely popular amongst both boys and girls. The 40's saw an age of new board games, of which many have become classics - Scrabble, Cootie and Chutes & Ladders, all launched by the world's largest board games manufacturer, Hasbro. In 1956 the kids classic modelling clay was born - Play-Doh was released and remains a best selling toy. The girls classic doll, Barbie was launched by Mattel in 1959 - the name was taken from the daughter of the co-founder, Elliot Handler. His wife, Ruth was the intiator of the Barbie brand. Fascinated by her daughters interest in cut out paper dolls, Ruth suggested creating a three dimensional doll for girls - and Barbie was born.
During the 1960's, toys grew more advanced and toy manufacturers began releasing games that involved more strategic ability. For example, in 1965 Hasbro launched Operation - a game that required a steady hand and good eyesight in order to win. In 1966, both Memory Game and Twister entered the market, the latter being a modern day favourite for children's birthday parties.
The simple but exciting game Connect Four was first on sale in 1974, again another release by Hasbro. During the 80's, toys that won classic status for the era include the Cabbage Patch Kids from Mattel, Trivial Pursuit, Micro Machines and the Super Soaker - all from Hasbro.
Classic toys are very collectable, sometimes fetching high prices at auction providing they have been kept in good condition with most of the original pieces intact.
