Born 14th August 1950, Gary Larson is a cartoonist and the creator of 'Far Side', a single-panel comic strip, which appeared in many newspaper until his retirement in 1995.

Gary Larson was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington. His educational establishments
include Curtis High School, and Washington State University, where he graduated in 1972 with a communications degree.

The Far Side contained themes that were often surreal, such as the dangers of being an insect and the behaviour of animals when humans aren't looking. One of Larson's famous cartoons shows two chimps grooming. One discovers a human hair on the other and says about 'doing a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?' This referred to Jane Goodall, who is best known for her forty-five year study of chimpanzee social and family life.

The Jane Goodall Institute disapproved of the cartoon and had their lawyers draft out a letter to Larson, in which the cartoon was describe as an 'atrocity'. Jane Goodall, however, found the cartoon amusing and stopped her lawyers from taking action. All profits from sales of shirts that feature this cartoon now go to the Jane Goodall Institute.
