How Does A Car Engine Work?

The accurate name for the engine inside a car is the internal combustion engine. In basic terms, this is a device which burns fuel inside a small space known as a combustion chamber. This produces an exothermic reaction ~ a reaction which produces heat and pressure. These new, hot gases expand, and then in turn push moving parts such as pistons.

The process behind the internal combustion engine relies on a fuel. These are typically petroleum-based, such as diesel or petrol. In the first instance this fuel, combined with oxygen inside the combustion tank, must be ignited. This is normally achieved by the use of an electrical ignition such as a battery, which produces a spark. The battery in a car is recharged by the alternator once the engine is running. Once ignited, the air-fuel mixture has more energy than it did previously. This energy is manifested as heat and pressure, which expand to push the pistons of the engine. After the pistons have been moved the excess gasses are removed from the engine, generally through a ventilation system, so the pistons are allowed to return to their original positions and the cycle can continue.
