What Are Known Cults?

It's hard to give a list of cults because "cult" is a subjective term. Every religion starts off as a cult, in some ways. Some recent ones include Heaven's Gate in the 90s, where people wore Nikes and did a mass suicide, Jim Jones had a cult called the People's Temple that he took to Guyana and poisoned with Kool-Aid...Charles Manson's "Family" was a cult as well--they all believed Manson was the second coming of Jesus. Cults don't tend to last very long, usually they are a scheme for the leader to get everything he can from the "followers" and then either kill them (rare) or cash out and leave in some way usually. By the time you hear about most cults, it's over, because that kind of publicity comes from the people being made to do ridiculous things (like that Mormon guy who ran an LDS-affiliated cult and had child marriages) and the families usually get involved and things tend to unravel. That or the authorities get involved, in cases like that Mormon guy.
Oh, there was also David Koresh in Waco, Texas who headed up the Branch Davidians. There ended up being a Waco Massacre which is all over the internet if you type it into google.
Outside of America, there are plenty of small regional religions that most of us who are Christian, Jewish, or Muslim would think of as a "cult".

The Moonies (Unification Church) are a cult, and yes they are still going strong. My ex wife's parents are high up followers of the Moonies (or 'Loonies' as I like to call them.)
