Are we referring to the palm tree or the palm as in palm of the hand? The palm tree was used in coat of arms as a symbol of victory, of righteousness and resurrection. If a branch was seen it symbolized victory, royal honour or justice. It was used in a similar was by the ancient Assyrians and Egyptians to symbolize victory. The fact that its leaves never fell from the branches it became a symbol of immortality. It was a part of the Egyptian religion, where it was sacred as it nourished the dead.

The symbol of the palm, in the sense of the hand, can be symbolic of blessing, as is seen in the Eastern Cultures. The Buddha is often seen sitting with his palm raised. It is also used as a symbol in traffic laws to mean stop or halt. The Shiites in Iraq use the symbol on their "Alams" or flag staffs to remind them of the Martyr Abbas from the battle of Karbala.
