Where Was The First Tram Network Established?

    The first tram network was established in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States in 1828; trams first came in to being in the early part of the 19th century. The early trams were horse drawn carriages running over metal tracks; they were popularly known as streetcars and were first seen in Baltimore and in New York City.

    In the late 19th and early 20th century trams began to run on electricity and public transport systems featuring tram networks developed rapidly in several parts of Europe especially in the major cities like London, Paris and Berlin.

    The word tram was mainly used in Europe while North America they were known as streetcars or trolleys. The first electric tram line was set up in Lichterfelde near Berlin in Germany in 1881; trams in this period were powered by various means like steam or petrol driven trams or those that were pulled by cable.
