Washington Irving was born in New York City as the youngest of 11 children. His father was a wealthy merchant, and his mother, an English woman, was the granddaughter of a clergyman. According to a story, George Washington met Irving, named him after him, and gave his blessing. In the years to come Irving would write one of his greatest works. Washington Irving became the first American author to become known internationally as a famous author. It was Washington who had fought against the British in the War of Independence. Washington wrote many books, among them was his Legends of the Alhambra and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He also wrote the famous Rip Van Winkle which is what most people remember him for today. Washington was born on the 3rd of April in 1783 and died on November 28th, 1859. He is still regarded as an author of high quality and the highly successful film, Sleepy Hollow, staring Johnny Depp, was based on Washington's the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
