When Was The Velvet Underground Formed?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Although the origins of The Velvet Underground go way back to 1964, the band actually started out in 1965. Although they did not get much recognition then, they are widely accepted as being the inspiration for the alternative music scene.

They were one of the first rock music groups who experimented heavily with the form through the incorporation of avant-garde influences. The group's often raw, and sometimes difficult sound may not have gone down too well at the time, but would later influence numerous punk, noise rock, and alternative rock bands.

Singer and guitarist, Lou Reed's lyrics introduced new levels of socialy relevant themes and sleaze to rock. Most critics and rock musicians agree that The Velvet Underground marked a clear turning point in rock history. With the release of their debut album, 'The Velvet Underground and Nico', music could never be as innocent or blissfully ignorant and unselfconscious as before.
