In year 1803 Richard Trevithick was first man who built a steam locomotive for railway but there is contradictory proof that it never ran. In year 1803 or 1804 Trevithick steam engine appears to have functioned.

Over the next 20 years there were numerous efforts at construction steam engines but they were not generally a success. At last in year 1825 George Stephenson drove Locomotion No1 with six wagons full of passengers on 40km track.

After 4 years Rocket train was run at the Rain hill tests/ trials to show the best train. George Stephenson’s Rocket train emerged as the winner and was very much advanced than Locomotion No 1. Nearly all steam engines from then on used the features of Rocket engine containing blast pipe, horizontal boiler, non-vertical cylinders and steam dome.

The oldest engine in existence is Puffing Billy by William Hedley which was manufactured in 1813. It was utilized on a coal mine railway until 1862. This train has 2 perpendicular cylinders driving beams which linked to cranks that were cogged to the driving wheels.
