    It took me a minute to realize you were making it into an acronym G - O - L - F, Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. No need to forbid me... I'm happy when the guys go off, as long as they don't come home too grouchy!

      Old wive's (or old gentlemen's) tales aside, golf comes from an old Scottish dialect, spelled in a variety of ways (goulf, golve, gouf)  This probably came from the Dutch word kolf, which means a bat or a club.
