The novelisation of the movie Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was written by Terry Brooks. It was published by Del Rey Books, the New York-based publishers, on April 21 in the 1999. It is based on the script of the movie of the same name, which was written and directed by George Lucas and starred Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd and Ian McDiarmid. The movie was released on May 19, 1999.

In the novel, the background of the young protagonist, Anakin Skywalker (played by Jake Lloyd in the film), is described in greater detail. He talks to a pilot about angels and crashes Watto's podracer in the race at Sebulba's behest. The Sith's background is also given, explaining their origin and why they wanted to take revenge against the Jedi.
