It's an international charity which builds safe affordable homes sold to people in need. Habitat for Humanity (HfH) was started in 1976, and is nominally Christian, although they describe themselves as non-denominational. Although most of HfH's work has been in the developing world, they also work in the most poverty-stricken areas of the world's richest countries, or in disaster-afflicted areas anywhere (such as in Louisana after Hurricane Katrina).
HfH's most famous patron and participant is probably ex US president Jimmy Carter, who every year, since 1984, has led a work group to one of HfH's project sites. Carter himself rolls his sleeves up to work along side everyone.
Carter's work for HfH was part of the reason he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
More recently, the rockstar Jon Bon Jovi was appointed first Ambassador of HfH, as part of a new outreach and publicity initiative.
