What Was The Anglo Saxon Chronicle?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Despite its name, this was not a newspaper, It was however, a record of life in Anglo Saxon Times.  It was started by Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, in 891.  He reigned from Ad 871-899.  His reign was dominated by two things, the struggle against Danish invaders and his encouragement of learning.
The Chronicle was to describe, year by year, what it was like to live in these times and carried on until the 12th Century.  He even made it retrospective, so that it gave some historical evidence about the Roman invasion of AD43 and carried on from there.  Undoubtedly the document is not objective.  It is likely that some political 'spin' was added and moreover, some parts of it are certainly more detailed than others.  However, it remains the most accurate historical document about what life was like in early Anglo Saxon times and for this reason is still revered today.
