What's The Difference Between Kinetic And Potential Energy?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

In Chemistry potential energy is related to the beginning and ending energy level of the reactants before and after reaction. So not how they get there but where they end up.

Reactions where the main reactant ends up with a lower energy give off energy in the process and are therefore exothermic. When the final state is higher energy it is an endothermic reaction.

Reactions can not occur though unless the reactants have the energy required for a change to occur and go through the steps of a reaction. This relates to the Kinetic energy of the reactants.
So here it is not where they end up but rather the journey. But the 1st answer while simple is correct. Kinetics has to do with movement and Potential has to do with starting and ending states.

If you want an easier answer:

Potential energy is the energy of non-moving stuff
kinetic energy is the energy of moving stuff

OK let's get easy. Potential energy is the energy that an object at rest has like a bolder on a cliff, lots of potential there. Kinetic energy is the energy from the velocity or speed of an object, like a moving car, lots of kinetic energy there. If that helps when considering chemical reactions this may help. This was however a Chemistry question, not a Physics question, yes?

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion and Potential energy is stored energy or energy by virtue of position.

There is much kinetic and potential energy in a water fall, this is one reason water falls are used to generate electricity.

In physics, matter is considered to possess two kinds of energies – kinetic or potential energy. Kinetic energy is defined as the energy an object displays or possesses because of some kind of motion or action. Potential energy, on the other hand, is the energy an object possesses or displays by virtue of its state of rest.

Potential energy is the energy of motion, i.e., there is potential energy in sugar, when you consume sugar you feel like doing something because the potential energy is released.

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.
