Why Is The Card Game Poker Called Poker?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Wikipedia's not the absolute authority on anything, but here's what it says there:

The name of the game likely descended from the Irish Poca (Pron. Pokah) ('Pocket') or even the French poque, which descended from the German pochen ('to brag as a bluff' lit. 'to knock'

I'd check out en.wikipedia.org and search "Poker" for lots of interesting information, including that poker may not actually be based on the games mentioned above.

I had never heard that bit about it maybe coming from Irish.
