You need to go right away to the landlord/tenant board and talk with them about it. Usually, if you are going through something like this, you can withhold the rent, but you have to notify the landlord that you are doing this, and you should always do it in writing, and make coppies for yourself, and the landlord. But, please, still go and talk to the board. Hope this helps, good luck.

Contact your local Legal Aid Society.
If you can't find their listing, then call The Department For Children and Families. They can give you the contact number.
Do it Now. Don't wait until the police show up at your door to remove your belongings.
Sounds like this is a classic Slum Lord.
Is the eviction notice signed and stamped by your locol county courthouse? If so, you need to act fast.
Also, try offering him PART of your rent. If he accepts it, then he can't force you to leave, and this will buy you some time until the legal aid attorney can get the eviction stopped.
Also,( AFTER ) he accepts partial payment, write up a letter advising him that you are no longer going to pay rent until he makes the repairs. Make a copy of the letter, then send it CERTIFIED RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED. That way you have proof that you sent the letter. You will most likely end up having to pay the rent owed PRIOR to him receiving the registered letter. It is law in most states that you are required to serve notice of intent to not pay rent. Your Legal Aid atty. Can do all this for you if you get one soon enough.
The up-side is that, if, the apartment is in the condition you say it is, then you probably won't have to pay any of the rent from that point on.
Once the repairs Are made, then you would have to resume rent payments as usual.
He could also be slapped with heavy fines from the Board of Health.
Been there, done that. Good luck to you.
