What Does A Video Codex Do?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term video codec is defined as a device or a software application which enables the compression of video and/or the decompression for digital video. The compression of videos generally utilizes lossy data compression and historically, video was stored in the form of analog signals on magnetic tape.

Around the same time when compact discs (which are abbreviated as CD's) entered the market as a replacement for analog audio tapes (CD's are in the digital format), it was considered to a viable option to start the process of storing and using the videos in digital formats. A variety of these technologies soon began to emerge in the market.

Both audio and video call for the use of customised methods of compression. Many solutions have been tried by engineers and mathematicians to tackle this problem. However, there seems to be a complicated balance between the quality of the video, the bit rate (which is defined as the quantity of the data which is needed to represent the quality of the video), the complexity of encoding and decoding the algorithms, etc.
