Seneca a 1st Century Roman Philosopher once said "Time heals what reason cannot"
According to the New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy 'Time heals all wounds' implies that people eventually get over insults, injuries, and hatreds.
To imply that time, as an ointment or an entity, steps forward or in some way helps us would be somewhat incorrect. What this statement does have to do with is our minds. It is a natural tendency of the mind to forget or suppress or block unpleasant events. In this way it can avoid stress and cope with trauma. It is a natural coping mechanism.
Pain is felt then, not now. Try imagining the taste of chocolate and you will find it somewhat easy but to call back a sensation of forgotten pain is not that easy to recall.
But there are exceptions, and these are mostly emotional in nature and not physical. These exceptions are mostly pertaining to childhood. Freud states that even not weaning a child gently can lead to him having problems coping in life. Cases of sexual abuse are also such that they remain buried for long but are always there.
In one sense:
People forget what you did, people forget what you said, but people never forget how you made them feel.
