How Can I Pick A Sweet Potato From A Yam?

I LOVE sweet potatos but I really don't enjoy yams. I've heard that they are actually both sweet potatos just two different kinds. A lot of times at the grochery stores they put both of these in the same bin. Do you know what I'm talking about? The ones I like are more yellow than orange, which you think would be enough but at the store I can't really tell the difference. I've been disapointed by this one too many times now.

Yes, it turns out they are completely different things - the sweet potato is this gorgeous, bright yellow or orange, soft (when cooked) and sweet vegetable that you and I both love, while the yam is a starchy, less bright and much less sweet tuber from Africa. There is a very detailed description here.

I always pick the white ones because they don't get too watery when you microwave them or boil them.

Sweet potatoes and yams are the same thing.  Different  varieties will produce a different color.  Yams are dark brown on the out side and white in the middle and very bitter -- so stick to  the yellow stuff.

Try making a potato salad with 2 lg. Sweet and 2 lg.  White potatoes.   Cook in microwave cool in refrig.  Peal  dice it up and add you favourite comments, egg, onion, celery, pickle relish or olives  and mayo...  Enjoy --- marty
