There are many types of RAM, some old and some new, but the following are some of the more common types:
SRAM: Static random access memory is used mainly for caching.
DRAM: Dynamic random access memory requires constant refreshing as it has memory cells with a paired capacitor and transistor.
FPM DRAM: Fast page mode dynamic random access memory is the original form of DRAM. After the first bit is located it waits for it to be processed before searching for the second bit.
EDO DRAM: Extended data-out dynamic random access memory starts reading the second bit before as soon as the first bit is found and doesn't wait for it to be processed.
SDRAM: Synchronous dynamic random access memory uses the burstmode concept and has slightly better performance than EDO RAM.
DDR SDRAM: Double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory is like SDRAM but with a higher bandwidth, making it faster.
RDRAM: Rambus dynamic random access memory is different to the above types and uses what is called the Rambus channel.
