There were quite a few reasons for the extreme levels of discontent within the Roman Republic towards its end. Basically, though the Roman Empire expanded mercurially through aggression, conquest, etc., the basic structure required to handle such expansion, be it in terms of political governance or social management, remained the same. This was a great setback as the different existing systems actually required upgrading to be able to absorb the responsibilities of governance which had increased manifold. This was one of the key reasons for the growing discontent.

The second major reason was the issue of land reform. Between the years 133-31 B.C., the Roman Republic just went from bad to worse, and land reform was a major reason for the brewing discontent and unrest. Not just that, the political system in place during those times was not an organized, well-oiled machine. A well-oiled machine was what was required; instead what they had in place was a system that thrived on family ties and connections. This kind of a scenario made effective impartiality almost impossible. These are the key reasons for the increasing discontent in Rome during the last days of the Roman Republic.
